Chairman's - Newsletter October 2024
Sunday 20th October 2024
Dear Members,
We had a very busy September with many successful events.
The Quiz Night on September 13th was enjoyed by over 40 members with 9 teams taking part. Carolyn acted as Quiz Mistress and provided four rounds of searching questions on General Knowledge, Geography and History, Sport and Popular Music. With Jokers to be played and Table Questions featuring Island Pubs to be answered, this led to a most stimulating evening. Steve Love entertained us on September 24th with his songs about Island Life which made us smile. Steve is always happy to play free of charge at charity events and parties as it is his passion.
Toby’s Autumn Walk early this month was also enthusiastically welcomed by our members who all came away having learnt something new. Click here to view report and photos Friends of Osborne | 2024 Autumnal Walk
Christopher Warleigh-Lack’s ‘Hidden Osborne’ Tour on Friday 11th proved very popular again. Christopher led two groups of members around Osborne showing them parts of the building that regular visitors never get to see. All these tours and events are booked via the Newsletter or website. Most bookings are with BACs but unfortunately some members forget to log into their bank to pay! I know it is easily done and have done it myself, but can I please encourage members to pay at the time of booking. This will help our very busy Treasurer and Events Organiser. There is a booking closing date on most events but some events, such as talks, are left open for late bookings. If the event is cancelled or doesn’t take place due to bad weather, you will be refunded. If, however you forget to turn up, you will forfeit your payment.
We have some upcoming events. Unfortunately, Sarah Lang has had to cancel her talk on Thursday 17thOctober due to a family bereavement. Kevin Shaw has kindly offered to step in.
Kevin Shaw will give a talk on ‘The Queens’ Consorts’ on Thursday 17th October. 11:00 to 12:00. This talk compares Prince Albert and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. There are a remarkable number of similarities. Kevin gave us a fascinating talk last month about Queen Victoria’s childhood. Over 40 members attended and I am sure this talk will be equally popular. All members who were booked for Sarah Lang’s talk on “Princess Beatrice, Island Governor”, have automatically been transferred to this talk.
