Visit to Dimbola Lodge

Wednesday 6th May 2026

Julia Margaret Cameron was an 18th century photographer who transformed photography into her own unique art form. Her work, disregarded in history, we now know as soft lens effect which was ahead of its time.

Her many portraits include Alfred Lord Tennyson who was her close friend and neighbour. Amazingly, we found out Tennyson had his own entrance to Dimbola.

Penny, from Dimbola, gave us a very interesting talk about Julia, bringing her to life with stories of her kindness and generosity with details of Julia's life experiences, travel, marriage, children and personality.

How lucky we are to have Julia’s home Dimbola Lodge on the Isle of Wight.

We all thoroughly enjoyed the visit with much discussion in the cafe. May we continue to support Dimbola, a charity like ours.
