A Yotties Tale by Jay Sowerby

Friday 17th April 2026

Talk in the Education Suite at 11:00

Jay tells of his life and experience serving onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia

Jay joined the navy in 1988 and served on HMS Ark Royal during the Gulf War in 1991. Seeking a new challenge, he made a decision that changed his life for ever and requested to be considered for Royal Yacht service. He was accepted and drafted to HMY Britannia in 1992. He remained a ‘Yottie’ until he left the navy, at the same time Britannia was decommissioned.

During Royal service, there could be over 220 Royal yachtsmen working on board at any one time, affectionately known as ‘Yotties’. Hand-picked to meet the very highest standards, each and every sailor chose this special ship for the honour and privilege of serving her Majesty the Queen and country.

Jay will give us a real insight into life on board during his time on the Royal yacht.

Cost £7 (to include a coffee/tea and biscuit)

Members will be met at the green gate outside Petty Officers' Quarters at 10:40 am and given a lanyard.  Please do not go though Admissions.
